On Monday, GrabOne employees Shayle and David proudly handed over a cheque for the sum of $36,000 to Christchurch City Missioner, Michael Gorman . This sum was raised thanks to the 7,200  $5 dollar donations made by people around New Zealand using the page GrabOne put up following the earthquake.

This was our way of asking New Zealand to give to the Christchurch region, so devastated by last weekends earthquake, instead of grabbing a deal for themselves. This made it easier for people around the country to donate, and it really made a huge impact. With dozens of tweets on twitter, and even more comments, debates and conversations on twitter – we were truly amazed at the response this created, and how many people were able to give their support. And It really helped to emphasise the brilliance of ordinary kiwis in getting together to get something done. Whether that’s to make a great saving or an even greater donation, it’s that simple collective effort that counts for so much, and I that’s what GrabOne is all about.

Responding on behalf of the Christchurch City Mission, Michael Gorman expressed his gratitude for the funds donated. Here’s his message, in which he explains what this means for the mission, and how they’ll make use of the money raised:

“Words are so limited when it comes to offering thanks for the wonderful fundraising effort that all of you at “GrabOne” have done for the people of Christchurch following the earthquake.

$36,ooo is a very substantial amount of money and all we can do is assure you that we will use this money to help those who have suffered from the quake. Already we have seen a demand for our services. We will give until our stores are empty as we know that good people like yourselves will help us to keep going.

The money you have raised will be used for the food bank, social work services, proving bedding and household equipment and ongoing work with those who have lost their homes and in some cases their employment.

When the aftershocks have stopped and time passes I think that people will need even more support. At the moment we are living on adrenalin but soon people will start feeling the strain of living ways from their ruined homes and facing the threat that their jobs may be at risk. The City Mission has been in Canterbury for over 130 years and we are not going to let an earthquake stop us from helping those in need. This is the best thanks that we can give you for your goodness to us.”

At GrabOne we’re really proud to have achieved this for those residents of Christchurch in need following the quake. And while we realise the rebuilding – of homes and lives – has only just begin, we’re positive this is just one small step towards helping Christchurch get back on it’s feet.
