A few weeks ago Squid Row Gastro Bar hosted their deal on GrabOne, selling out at the phenomenal total of 2000 vouchers before 11:00 am! So last week I caught up with Tom & Jeff Wiley to pose them a few quick questions… and to see if I could get Zen, the house barman, to demonstrate some bartending magic and share a little of his knowledge on the fine art of Mojito Making.

ME: So, why the Name Squid Row?
Jeff: Well there’s a  bar called in Mexico called El Squid Roe where all the Surf Bums hang out and that’s kinda where we got the name from originally. It’s also because of Squid being seafood and as the name suggests seafood is our specialty…

ME: Now for a random one…if you were a fish what kind of fish would you be and Why?
Tom: Hmm a dolphin because they can do tricks and jump out of the water…
Jeff: Don’t think a dolphin is a fish though.
Me: Nah, a dolphin’s a mammal isn’t it?
Jeff: A kingfish would be cool.
Tom: Yeah or a Swordfish…a gaming fish or something would be awesome I reckon.

ME: What’s your favourite place to go to in NZ?
Jeff: Whangamata is good
Tom: Yeah it’s a great Surf Beach, that’s where we go most summers
Jeff: Yeah for a good kiwi summer trip Whangamata is great

How has working with GrabOne been for you?
Jeff: Great…yeah in one word, working with GrabOne been great for us.
Tom: Yeah we were really blown away by the GrabOne team and we’re pretty keen to be doing another deal again soon.

Want to glean a few tips on how to make the perfect Cuban Mojito? Check out the video below. If you’re up for the trouble of going out, getting all the ingredients and making one yoursel, go for it.  But then again,  you can always walk down to Squid Row (holding that GrabOne voucher in your hot little hand) and leave it to Zen. Because trust me, he makes this look easy…

*** Mojito’s are traditionally made with rum, but if you’re not a drinker, it is just as easy to make them non-alcoholic as well. As with any alcoholic drink, these are best enjoyed in moderation as you sit and soak up the sun with some tasty seafood nibbles alongside.
